The international interdisciplinary scientific conference will be held on the occasion of the Memorial year of Clement of Ohrid, announced in 2016 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and in respect to the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The conference will take place at the Jan Stanislav Institute of Slavistics of Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava in cooperation with the Scientific Center for Cyrillo-Methodian Studies of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Bulgarian Language of Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin of BAS and Bulgarian embassy in Slovakia, in coordination with Faculty of Arts of University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava as well as Faculty of Orthodox Theology of University of Presov.
Two conference topics are:
1. Clement of Ohrid and his Contribution to the Slavic and European Culture (ThLic. Andrej Škoviera, PhD.)
Saint Clement of Ohrid was one of the disciples and collaborators of Thessalonian brothers, Saints Cyril and Methodius, and one of the pillars of their missionary activity in Great Moravia when the Slavic Christian culture started to develop fully. Clement of Ohrid’s work is of fundamental importance for the development of Slavic literature and education in the period also known as the „Golden age of Bulgarian literature“. From the perspective of the Slovak history and culture it was Jan Stanislav who brought out the personality of Clement of Ohrid pointing out to his potential Slovak origin. The aim of this topic is to present current researches related to the personality and work of Clement of Ohrid and also his contribution to Slavic and European cultural heritage. Although special attention will be given to the life, work and reverence for St. Clement of Ohrid, his contribution should be introduced comprehensively in the context of Cyril and Methodius’ missionary work (st. Gorazd, Naum, Angelar, Sava) and of his legacy in Latin and Slavic writing and cultural tradition.
2. Language and Culture in Slavic Contexts (from Slavic Enthnolinguistics) (Mgr. Katarína Žeňuchová, PhD.)
Language research as a cultural phenomenon in the context of language picture of the world and of human thought found its expression in ethnolinguistics, which explores the close connection between language and traditional spiritual culture as two inseparable and interdependent parts of the social identity. Ethnolinguistics thus perceives language not only as a communication tool, but especially as an expression of culture of each society through particular terms and verbal designations associated with economic, historical, social and spiritual milieu from the developmental point of view.
We primarily dedicate to four topics: 1. Current focus and researches in Slavic ethnolinguistics. 2. The issue of comparative research of folk terminology. 3. Language picture of Slavic spiritual culture. 4. Language and culture of Bulgarians and Slovaks.
